Since 1989, Project Graduation volunteers have been committed to throwing an "All-Night Party" for our graduates. This all-night party provides seniors and their guests a safe, fun, alcohol and drug-free environment in which to celebrate this milestone with their entire class.
There are strict check-in and check-out procedures, with car keys being taken from attendees until their check-out and departure. The rest of the evening is filled with a wide variety of activities, entertainment, and plenty of food and drink.
Prizes, all of which are donated by the community or purchased with funds raised by the committee, are awarded throughout the evening. Prize value increases as the night progresses, and can only be claimed if the graduate is present. We want to make sure our graduates are interested in staying at the party until the end.
We want this event to be "the place to be" for these young adults and one of their fondest high school memories.
In 1979, the community of Oxford Hills, Maine experienced seven alcohol and drug-related teen deaths during the commencement season of that year. In the wake of these tragedies, the community rallied together to offer the next year’s seniors a safe and alternative event.
During Oxford Hills’ 1980 commencement period, there were no fatalities, no alcohol or drug-related injuries, and no arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. Maine’s first Project Graduation was such a success that many other high schools adopted similar programs.
By 1986, Project Graduation activities were held in fifty states - sponsored by the community and under the supervision of many adult volunteers.
